Refugees generally flee their home country due to some disaster such as war or persecution. To qualify as a refugee a person must prove a well-founded fear of being persecuted exists. This fear can be based on their race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group.
A person who ordered, assisted or participated in the persecution of others based on the reasons mentioned above do not qualify for refugee status.
How to Enter the United States as a Refugee
Refugee status is requested from outside the United States and a person must receive referral to the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP). Once referral is received a person will receive assistance with their application and interview process and if approved, relocation assistance. Once a person enters the United States under refugee status, he or she is authorized to work.
While there are government agencies help with the refugee process, strict compliance with processing requirements is necessary and it is a good idea to contact an attorney that specialized in immigration law to assist you in this difficult process.
